Project MUSE - Romeo and Juliet (review)

So much wasted life, but yet a classic in its own way. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about two young people from feuding families who fall in love, only to suffer from several unfortunate events and die together. Many people dislike this play but I love it. The rather inappropriate jokes made reading a lot more entertaining and I loved the personalities of all the characters, especially the Nurse and Mercutio. Probably the most famous work of Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet is a tale of two star-crossed lovers. Romeo is part of the Montague family while Juliet is a Capulet, and in spite of the sworn hatred between both families, the two begin to have romantic feelings towards one another.

The Story of Romeo and Juliet – Audiobook in English with Subtitles

As Shakespeare adapted the tale for the Elizabethan stage, he wove elements of Elizabethan drama and a certain level of bawdiness by including older characters that were not present in the original story. The play was well-received in its time. It remained popular through the centuries, and is still a favorite to this day. As much as Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story, it is also a play about hate. The bloody feud between the Capulets and the Montagues is the backdrop for all of the action in the play and it is the catalyst for the tragic suicides of the two lovers. One may idealize the purity of love between Romeo and Juliet, but we must pay as much attention to the hate and anger which fuel the story. Love and hate are equally tragic each in their own way.

It is her favorite movie and she wanted to show it in class. The ridiculous essays I was forced to compose about it certainly didn't help. Shakespeare did add in some aspects but the meeting in the ballroom, the sleeping draught jjliet such were already in the poem. The motif of fate continues to the very end of the play.

Chris "that's what criti said" Chris. In terms of language and style, Romeo and Juliet might possibly be the best of all Shakespeare's work. I would like to rather appreciate him for his creation this time. It was enriching and educating.

Really impressive. The bloody feud between the Capulets and the Montagues is the backdrop for all of the action in the play and it is the catalyst for the tragic suicides of julift two lovers. The story is about nothing at all?

Just type. They see each other as sources of light. Families can talk about the love between Romeo and Juliet -- two tenagers who have known each other for only about one day. More filters?

  1. Romeo and Juliet is perhaps the most famous love story in the world. The Montagues Romeo and the Capulets Juliet are two important families in Verona, who are engaged in a bitter feud. It tells of an intense all-consuming love and how that love is powerful enough to hope to exist beyond mortal life. The plot is similar to the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, who fell in love with each other in spite of the feud raging between their families. 🤞
