American Library Association | Banned Books Week

We compile lists of challenged books in order to inform the public about censorship efforts that affect libraries and schools. The ALA condemns censorship and works to ensure free access to information. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection. Books usually are challenged with the best intentions—to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information.

  1. Whether banning books calls to mind historical, homegrown controversies surrounding classics like " The Catcher in the Rye " Salinger and " Naked Lunch " Boroughs or the infamous Nazi book burnings of the '30s, it's easy to believe that such censorship has been retired by democratic countries. Every year, the American Library Association tracks the challenges to library, school, and university materials and the books banned or burned as a result. Without collective hindsight, contemporary censorship simply slips into obscurity. However, since the ALA's database is built by media coverage and individual reports , it's not exhaustive; there could be many more challenges that go unreported. The reasons for banning books don't really change. 🙏
