The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart. And the reason I watched that movie is because I am a longtime fan of Studio Ghibli yes, that Ghibli! Okay, okay. Definitely not as exciting. Poor broomstick. After that, the story proceeds pretty much identically in both mediums: Mary is bored, wants to do something to help around the house, gets in the way, meets Tib the cat, finds the flower and the broomstick, and gets kidnapped by said broomstick to Endor College, a magical academy accessible only through magical means. Then we hit the part of the book I really liked more than the movie.

The film tells a story of a girl named Mary Smith who finds "fly-by-night", a mysterious flower that can give her the power to become a witch for only one night. The bored, friendless girl tries to make herself useful through chores, but she repeatedly messes up. A local boy named Peter teases her for both her clumsiness and her wild red hair, which she hates. Tib-cat and Gib-cat, Peter's cats, lead Mary to some mysterious glowing flowers. Zebedee, the estate gardener, identifies the flowers as "fly-by-night"; legend has it that witches covet the flower for its magical power.

  1. But I suppose that was part of the flowrr. Definitely worth the read at least, with guidance by his younger sister from the future. And it kept this adult completely entertained. A young boy encounters a magical garden which enables him to travel through time and meet his relatives from different eras, but dont expect too much.
